I can't freaking believe I forgot to mention this for two whole weeks. I should be ashamed of myself and barred from calling myself an Ole Miss fan for at least 24 hours.
As you all know, Ole Miss (and most of the SEC for that matter) is know for it's uncanny ability to drink incredible quantities of alcohol. This "stereotype" has sparked a debate across the country which has raged for decades: just who drinks the most? Virginia, a school that in many ways mirrors Ole Miss proclaims their imbibing prowess through their unofficial nickname: "Wahoo" a fish that legend tells, can drink it's own body weight. UT fans sing of their drunkitude in that wonderful old bluegrass ode to premarital sex and moonshine, "Rocky Top." Some Big Ten schools have a yearly battle for the little brown jug and anyone who's ever attended a game in the northeast during the winter knows that it takes a lot of whiskey to keep you feeling warm in that type of bone chilling cold. Back down south, UGA and Florida play in the world's biggest outdoor cocktail party while our Louisiana brethren pretty much use any excuse that comes along to swill great volumes of the nearest fermented beverage. All of this leads us to my beloved alma mater, Ole Miss.
Ole Miss has always been known for it's drinking. So much that the boozin has often overshadowed even the football in God's country. The evidence of this is all around. Take the popular phases around town: "We may not win every game, but we ain't never lost a party" and "Oxford: a drinking town witha football problem." Then there's the Hotty Toddy, a classic alcoholic drink that doubles as the school cheer, and has many legends regarding its origins, all of which center around drinking. Yes, the debate could go on forever, and one could cite endless subjective truths to prove one fan bases dominance of the sweet necter over the rest, but alas, we may never know who truly reigns supreme as America's drunkest fans...that is until now.
While Ole Miss was taking over Dallas and kicking Red Raiders in their rosy red asses, we managed to also acquire tangible evidence that all but proves just how much drunker we, as a fanbase are than the rest. You see, the "official" Ole Miss hotel for the Cotton Bowl was the Hyatt in downtown Dallas, and this hospitable establishment hosted our fans for three glorious nights. If I had to guess, I'd say the purveyors of the Hyatt's Atrium Bar will be lobbying hard to get us back ASAP. It turns out that Ole Miss fans didn't just bring them hotel guests, but actually set the single night alcohol sales record for the bar, not once, not twice, but three nights in a row with sales of $26,000; $27,000; and nearly $30,000 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, respectively. Yes, that's the correct number of zeros. All I can say is Hotty Toddy and thank you to all the fans who help make me so proud of my University.
